What ages and grade levels do you work with?
Light Tutoring Co. supports elementary, middle, and high school students.
Because tutoring is highly individualized, the best way to determine whether Light Tutoring Co. is a good fit is to schedule a free consultation so we can learn more about your child, their needs, and their goals.
What subjects do you tutor?
Light Tutoring Co. specializes in literacy, writing, mathematics, academic enrichment, and individualized learning support.
Literacy instruction ranges from foundational reading and systematic phonics to reading comprehension, written expression, essay writing, and advanced literary analysis.
Mathematics instruction emphasizes conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, problem solving, and mathematical reasoning.
We also provide individualized preparation for assessments including the ISEE, ERB assessments, and New York State ELA and Mathematics exams.
Do you work with students with ADHD or learning differences?
Absolutely.
Light Tutoring Co. was founded by a certified special educator with extensive experience supporting students with diverse learning profiles in inclusive educational settings.
Special education expertise informs all of our instruction—from breaking complex skills into manageable steps to providing scaffolds, incorporating multisensory learning, building executive functioning skills, and adapting instruction based on how an individual student learns best.
We maintain high expectations while providing the individualized pathway and support each learner needs to reach them.
Do you also work with students who are already doing well academically?
Yes.
Tutoring isn’t only about remediation.
Some students come to Light Tutoring Co. because they need support closing a specific skill gap. Others are thriving academically and need greater challenge, enrichment, or preparation for increasingly rigorous coursework.
In either case, instruction begins with the same question:

How do you determine what my child needs?
We begin by getting to know the whole learner.
Depending on the student’s goals, this may include a baseline assessment, review of schoolwork and assessment data, conversations with the family, and—when appropriate and with parent permission—collaboration with classroom teachers.
This allows us to identify strengths, misconceptions, skill gaps, and opportunities for growth before developing an individualized instructional plan.
Great tutoring shouldn’t begin with assumptions. It should begin with understanding.
What does a typical tutoring session look like?
No two students—or sessions—are exactly alike.
Lessons are designed around each student’s goals and may include explicit instruction, guided practice, independent application, problem solving, reading and discussion, performance tasks, games, manipulatives, or other high-engagement learning experiences.
What remains consistent is the philosophy:
Rigorous instruction. High engagement. Individualized support. Meaningful learning.
How do you make tutoring engaging?
We believe rigor and joy belong together.
Lessons are intentionally connected to students’ interests, personalities, strengths, and goals whenever possible.
A reluctant reader might discover a character they can’t stop talking about. A sports-loving mathematician might analyze statistics. A student developing foundational skills might practice through games, challenges, movement, or hands-on materials.
The academic goal remains rigorous.
The pathway there should make a child want to participate.
How do you measure progress?
Progress is an essential part of Light Tutoring Co.’s approach.
Depending on the student’s program, we may use baseline assessments, pre- and post-unit assessments, checks for understanding, performance tasks, student work, school data, standardized assessment results, and other measures of mastery.
This information isn’t simply collected at the end.
It continually informs what we teach next.
How will I know how my child is doing?
Clear, consistent communication with families is an important part of the Light Tutoring Co. experience.
Families receive monthly progress reports highlighting what their child has been working on, areas of demonstrated growth, skills that still need development, and priorities for upcoming instruction.
Progress is informed by student work, checks for understanding, assessments, and other meaningful measures of learning.
When helpful and authorized by the family, Light Tutoring Co. may also collaborate with classroom teachers to better understand school expectations and ensure tutoring is strategically supporting the student’s broader academic experience.
Families should never have to wonder whether tutoring is working. Growth should be visible, measurable, and shared.
Do you communicate with my child's teachers?
When helpful, appropriate, and authorized by the family, yes.
Collaboration with classroom teachers can provide valuable insight into curriculum, classroom performance, current goals, and areas where additional support may be beneficial.
The goal is for tutoring and school to work together rather than exist as two disconnected academic experiences.
Logistics
Do you offer both in-person and virtual tutoring?
Yes.
Light Tutoring Co. offers both in-person and virtual instruction, depending on the student’s needs, age, location, and availability.
Virtual sessions are interactive and intentionally designed for online learning rather than simply replicating an in-person lesson over a screen.
Where does tutoring take place?
In-person sessions may take place in a student’s home or in a private, reserved study room at a New York Public Library location, depending on the student’s needs, location, and schedule.
Virtual tutoring is also available and is intentionally designed to be interactive, engaging, and highly personalized.
We’ll determine the setting that works best for your child and family during the consultation.
How often do students typically meet?
Frequency depends on the student’s goals, needs, schedule, and the type of support being provided.
Many students benefit from consistent weekly instruction, while some students may require more intensive support during particular seasons or around specific academic goals.
We’ll discuss the recommended cadence during the consultation.

What happens during the free consultation?
The consultation is an opportunity for us to learn about your child before recommending anything.
We’ll talk about their strengths, interests, current academic experience, areas where they may need support or greater challenge, previous interventions or tutoring when relevant, and your goals for working together.
It’s also an opportunity for you to ask questions and determine whether Light Tutoring Co. feels like the right fit for your family.
There is no obligation to begin tutoring.
What happens after the consultation?
If Light Tutoring Co. appears to be a strong fit, we’ll recommend next steps based on your child’s needs.
Depending on the student, that may begin with a baseline assessment or initial session before establishing individualized goals and an instructional plan.
From there, instruction evolves based on what we learn about the student and the progress they make.
